Stillwater suffers third fatality

A Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada employee has been killed as a result of an accident at Stillwater Mining‘s (SWC-X) platinum-palladium mine in southwestern Montana.

An underground miner was struck by equipment operated by another Thyssen employee. The miner was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, where he passed away.

The fatality is the mine’s third this year.

The accident is under investigation and the Mine Safety and Health Administration is on-site.

“We are immediately implementing additional intensive safety initiatives to reinforce the importance of a safe workplace for all Stillwater Mining Company employees,” said Frank McAllister, Stillwater’s CEO, in a prepared statement.

Stillwater Mining is the only producer of palladium and platinum in the United States and is the only significant primary producer of platinum group metals outside of South Africa.
