Vancouver The 16-day-old strike at the Candelaria copper mine in Chile has come to an end. Workers at the Phelps Dodge (PD-N) run operation accepted the company’s offer on wages and benefits.
Candelaria been operating with less than half its staff since 556 union-affiliated workers began a strike on March 31 after collective bargaining broke down. Non-union workers carried the operation resulting in a “minimal” impact on copper production.
In 2002, Candelaria produced 199,000 tonnes of copper with this year’s output expected to hit 240,000 tonnes.
Phelps Dodge owns an 80% stake in Candelaria with Japan-based Sumitomo Metal Mining and Sumitomo holding 20%.
