Springlake underground resumes

AfriOre (AFO-T) has resumed underground production at the Springlake anthracite mine, north of Dundee in Kwazulu Natal, after recovering the remains an electric scoop operator killed by a rock fall in Section 6 of the mine late last month.

The company says operations geared up after the Inspectorate of Mines of the Department of Minerals and Energy approved the company’s updated safety and operational audit of underground mining operations.

During the shutdown, AfriOre increased production in the open-pit portion of the mine in an attempt to offset the impact of the temporary suspension. The company has set a revised mine plan aimed at making up for lost production over the next few weeks.

The rock fall isn’t the first incident at the mine; during the second quarter of 2001 the mine suffered a partial roof closure in the same section.
