Falconbridge hits hot hole in Sudbury

By January, Falconbridge (FL-T) plans to have two rigs join the one currently running on an exploration target 2.7 km north of the Sudbury airport after recently cutting some high-grade nickel-copper-platinum-group-metal mineralization.

The mineralization was encountered on the main contact of the Sudbury igneous complex and in the underlying footwall rocks that consist of brecciated granodiorite and Sudbury breccia.

Hole MAC-100A, a wedge hole from hole MAC-100, was highlighted by a 6.15-metre core length (from 1,656.9 metres below surface) averaging 2.3% nickel, 17.5% copper, 19.6 grams platinum 26.3 grams palladium and 20.5 grams gold per tonne from the foot wall zone.

Other intervals (from 2.5 to 9.65 metres long) in the Footwall zone returned between 0.52 and 6.5% nickel, 7.1 and 12.7% copper, 1.24 and 11.31 grams platinum, 0.42 and 17.12 grams palladium and 0.29 and 8.3 grams gold.

In the Contact zone, the hole cut a core length of 6.4 metres (from 1,439.7 m) running 2.4% nickel, 1.8% copper. Assay results for (platinum, palladium and gold are pending.

Previously, hole MAC-100 cut 0.1 metre (from 1,443 m) of 1.89% nickel and 0.71% copper. At a depth of 1,561.2, the hole cut a chalcopyrite vein in the footwall zone that assayed 0.26% nickel and 20.30% copper over 0.3 metres. The latest hole was wedged due east at a dip of 75 beginning at a depth of 800 metres in MAC-100. The mineralized intervals cut in the wedge hole lie about 75 to 124 metres away from those in hole MAC-100.

Borehole geophysical surveying in hole MAC-100A along both the contact and footwall zones indicate the potential for additional mineralization to the north, south and east of the hole. Further diamond drilling is planned for next year.

The mineralization is about 2 km southeast of Falconbridge’s Nickel Rim deposit where inferred resource stand at 1.6 million tonnes grading 1.6% nickel, 10.1% copper, 4.2 grams platinum, 3.5 grams palladium and 2.5 grams gold.
