Migoro gold resource tops a million ounces

Vancouver An independent resource estimate pegs the contained gold resource at Arizona-based Kansai Mining’s (KAN-V) Migoro gold project at 1.24 million oz., a 65% increase over the previous estimate.

Kansai’s Migoro project covers 310 sq. km. along the Migori greenstone belt on the eastern shores of Lake Victoria in southwestern Kenya.

The Macalder copper, zinc, gold, silver mine in the northern part of the concession was discovered in the 1930s and was mined until the early 1960s when all the easily accessible ore was exhausted. Modern exploration from 1988 to 1992 uncovered the MK deposit which has seen limited underground development from March 1995 through the middle of 1998. Extensive geochemical surveys and RC drilling totaling some 50,000 metres was done.

Kansai’s program of angled diamond drilling was designed to plug the gaps in the previous drill plan, upon which the 750,000 ounce resource was based. Previous drilling was based on angled reverse circulation holes that were largely drilled to within 90 metres of surface. The new drilling complimented by the previous drilling extended the strike length of the mineralization and determined that it extends below 100 metres to 150 metres depth. The average spacing between sections was 50 metres and a cut-off of 0.25 grams gold per tonne was used for each of the four bodies of mineralization.

The focus of exploration was at Kakula-Kalange-Munyu (KKM) which covers some 3 km of strike length; the Gori Maria which contains low grade mineralization that occurs over wide intervals of more than 400 metres of strike; the MK zone which contains high-grade shoots that were extended westerly along strike; and the high-grade Nyanza zone. In addition two holes intersected precious metal mineralization at the abandoned Macalder massive sulphide deposit.

The current resource has increased the contained oz. from 764,000 to 1,238,000 oz. as follows: 22.1 million tonnes grading 0.96 gram gold (679,000 oz.)in the KKM zone; 8.5 million tonnes grading 0.87 gram gold (240,000 oz.) in the Gori Maria zone; with 1.44 million tonnes grading 2.32 grams gold (108,000 oz.) in the MK zone and 1 million tonnes of 1.8 grams gold within the Macalder Tailings (57,878 oz.) Nyanza contains 840,000 tonnes grading 5.32 grams gold (144,000 oz.).

The company plans to test the extent of each of the zones further to increase the resources and outline higher grade sections.

Meanwhile the aftermath of cyclone Ivan resulted in severe and extensive road washouts from the record rainfall and has hampered access to the company’s Natal project in Venezuela.
