Although its original target in Greenland was base metals, Major General Resources (MGJ-V) is turning up heavy minerals, which indicates potential for kimberlite discoveries.
In the autumn of 1995, the company collected 31 samples from streams over several thousand square kilometres in the southwestern province of Gardar.
The samples weighed 10 kg each.
The program returned deep-red pyrope garnets and green-to-white chrome diopsides, indicating a kimberlite source.
The sampling did not confirm the presence of indicator minerals in the diamond stability field, though Major General will carry out more extensive sampling in the summer.
