The discovery of six diamonds in exposed bedrock has prompted Spider Resources (SPG-A) to secure the ground covering the occurrence near the town of Wawa, in northern Ontario.
The discovery was made by two prospectors last fall and a sample was subsequently submitted to the Saskatchewan Research Council for caustic dissolution. One macrodiamond and four micros were recovered from the 18.1-kg sample. The host rock is encased in Archean metasediments and is described as a highly altered, xenolithic, rich, mafic-to-ultramafic tuff. Measuring about 35 metres thick, the rock now consists chiefly of amphibole and chlorite.
Mapping and sampling will be carried out to determine the distribution and significance of similar rock exposures in the area.
