LETTER TO THE EDITOR — Geologist cites value of past work

I want to correct a quote attributed to myself in the article “Goldcorp’s fortune tied to Red Lake mine” (T.N.M., Sept. 23/96).

I did not say, “It’s not that earlier geologists were stupid or went to the wrong school . . .” In the underground tour, I did say that “the structures that host these high-grade orebodies continue above the 30th level, which is now being followed up. This is not to disparage the geologists that were here in the past. They were not able to follow up with the exploration that is being done today, because there was a lack of capital for diamond drilling and development in the past.”

I never used the phrase “not stupid” nor “wrong school.” I know personally some of those people, and not only are they not stupid; they are bright, energetic and professional. To suggest otherwise is an insult to them.
