Alaskan conference to highlight past and future

A conference designed to focus on both the past and future of the mineral industry will be held Sept. 9-13 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Entitled “International Symposium on Mining” and commemorating the centenary of the Yukon gold rush, the conference will feature speaker sessions and a trade show.

Scheduled topics include: the gold rush in retrospect; mining techniques and metallurgy; mineral use and economics of the gold rush; the impact of mining on literature; and the psychology and sociology of mining.

Among the speakers lined up are: Milton Ward, president of Cyprus Amax; Elmer Rasmuson, former president of the National Bank of Alaska; and Pierre Berton, renowned author and historian.
