The Laird First Nation and Cominco have signed a socio-economic participation agreement related to the Sa Dena Hes polymetallic mine in southeastern Yukon.
The partners agreed to work together in a spirit of co-operation and mutual respect with a commitment for traditional values, culture and protection of the land and its wildlife resources.
Cominco officials say the goals of the agreement include achieving a successful reopening, operation and reclamation of the San Dena Hes zinc-lead mine.
The agreement covers education, training, employment and business opportunities, and provides the framework for an ongoing business relationship.
Cominco says the earliest startup of the mine would be in the second quarter of 1988. The major holds an 25% interest in the operation, as does Cominco. The remainder is held by Korea Zinc.
