Partners find new zone at Dubenski gold property

Avalon Ventures (AVL-V) and Consolidated Westview Resource (CWS-V) have discovered a new gold zone on the East Cedartree portion of their joint-ventured Dubenski project near Kenora, Ont.

As part of an 8-hole, 2,036-metre program, four holes were drilled into the East Cedartree zone, which is 500 metres south of the better-defined Dubenski Shaft zone. Highlights from these first four holes include:

  • 42 metres (from 14 metres) grading 1.88 grams gold and 12 metres (from 88 metres) of 3.85 grams gold in hole 2;
  • 4.3 metres (from 46 metres) of 4.99 grams gold in hole 3; and
  • 13.6 metres (from 106 metres) of 1.16 grams gold in hole 3.

The four holes all intersected a broadly disseminated gold zone containing several high-grade portions within a 200-by-800-metre geochemical/geophysical anomaly. Gold mineralization is associated with disseminated pyrite throughout an intense alteration zone straddling a contact between a volcanic unit and a felsic porphyry intrusion. The new zone appears to dip steeply, though its true width is uncertain.

The partners regard the new zone as an attractive target for a large-tonnage gold deposit minable by open-pit methods. Further drilling is planned for the new year.

Assay results are pending from the final four holes of the program. They tested the depth potential of the Dubenski Shaft zone, which is estimated to contain a resource of 350,000 tonnes grading 6.36 grams gold to a depth of 150 metres.

Westview can earn a half-interest in Dubenski by spending $2.5 million on exploration over five years and paying half of the cash payments due to the underlying property owners. Avalon will be the operator until Dec. 31, 1998, at which time Westview can elect to take over.

Bema Gold (BGO-T) owns 35% of Westview and manages the company’s affairs.
