The Brisbane Australia-based Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Equipment and Technology has teamed up Terratec Asia Pacfic of Tasmania to develop an oscillating disc cutter (ODC).
Toward that end, the firms were jointly awarded a $3-million research grant from the Australian government, with matching funds to be provided by the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA).
Representatives of the 10 AMIRA recently travelled to Hobart, Australia, where a demonstration was conducted on high-strength granite.
Said hard rock cutting expert Paul Carnavas: “Cutting this rock brought the technology one step closer toward meeting the industry’s goals.” Next, the rig will be moved to a rock quarry.
The ODC technology is the brain-child of renowned design engineer David Sugden who, in collaboration with the Centre for Mineral Technology and Equipment (CMTE), developed the concept.
Research tests using a small-size oscillating disc cutter (with up to 50 mm-diameter discs) showed that the unit is capable of cutting granite greater than 250 Mpa (the point at which the granite fails).
