Denison Environmental Services, together with Innova Quest, will oversee the reclamation of the former Hope Brook mine site in southwestern Newfoundland.
The companies were chosen from six proposals submitted to the province’s Mines and Energy Department in November 2000.
“The [companies] have the experience and expertise needed to ensure the site is decommissioned and rehabilitated in a professional and efficient manner,” says Mines and Energy Minister Lloyd Mathews.
The cost of the clean-up is estimated at $2 million and will take about 30 months.
Newfoundland’s Mining Act requires that companies have rehabilitation plans in place before operating a new mine; this guarantees that funds will be available for rehabilitation once a mine has closed.
Denison Environmental Services is based in Elliot Lake, Ont., whereas Innova Quest operates out of St. John’s, Nfld.
Hope Brook operated from 1987 to 1997. In 1999, ownership was transferred to the government of Newfoundland and Labrador by default.
