BHP Billiton has rehired 100 of the 400 workers who took part in an illegal strike at the Mozal aluminum smelter in Mozambique. A decision on the remaining workers is imminent.
About two-thirds of Mozal’s personnel were fired because of the strike, which tried to force management to agree to better danger pay, bonuses and subsidies for housing.
However, the strike did not affect the smelter’s output because the remaining 250 workers were substituted by 70 employees from the Hillside and Bayside smelters in South Africa and by 130 labourers from Mozambique.
Nor did the strike affect construction of the Mozal 2 smelter, which is expected to double annual production to 500,000 tonnes aluminum.
BHP Billiton owns 47% of Mozal, with the remainder shared among Mitsubishi, with 25%, South Africa’s Industrial Development Corp., with 24%, and the Mozambique government, with 4%.
