Noranda launches automation marketing company

Noranda has formed a company called SIAMtec (Systeme Integre d’automatisation Miniere) to market its mining automation technologies. The launch coincided with Quebec Mining Week.

Noranda will own 75% of SIAMtec, with the remainder held by Quebec-based STAS, a company that specializes in marketing high-tech equipment.

More than 70% of the ore at Noranda’s Bell Allard mine in Matagami, Que., is mined using tele-remote mining, and about 80% of the ore from the Brunswick mine in New Brunswick is handled by automatic guiding or other automated technology.

The technology is being used at nine different mines in four countries.

“Noranda’s success at developing mining automation technologies has not only increased our efficiency and productivity, it has greatly contributed to improving overall workplace safety in mining,” says Donald Holdner, the company’s vice-president of technology. “Noranda is the only Canadian company that makes such widespread use of mining automation technologies in its production.”

Noranda began developing automated technology for mining in 1988 at a plant in Montreal. In 1995, the company transferred sub-licences of its mining automation technologies to STAS. To date, Noranda and its partners have invested more than $18 million in research and development.

STAS services the aluminum and mining sectors and employs more than 100 people.
