Doyon wins rescue contest

A crew from Cambior’s Doyon gold mine, near Rouyn-Noranda, Que., has won the annual Quebec mine rescue competition.

The competition, held at Malartic, brought together four teams that had won preliminary contests last fall.

Crews from Barrick Gold’s Bousquet complex near Val d’Or, the Canadian Salt Co.’s Seleine salt mine at les-de-la-Madeleine, and the Louvicourt base metals mine, a joint venture between Novicourt, Aur Resources and Teck Cominco, also near Val d’Or, competed against representatives from Doyon.

The competition included two stages: a simulated underground disaster and a theoretical exam. Competitors had to demonstrate their knowledge of first-aid and mine rescue techniques.

Members of the championship team include Dany Boisvert, Alain Bosse, Gilbert Dunn, Patrice Fortin, Michel Girard, Gilles Guay, Luc Matte, Benoit Rancourt, and Claude Swiderski.
