Alcan has won an award from the United Nations and the International Chamber of Commerce for excellence in sustainable development.
The award was presented to the aluminum company’s International Micro-Business Network (IMBN) at the recent World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.
“The [IMBN] is a hands-on program that teaches young people both environmental awareness and entrepreneurial skills,” says Daniel Gagnier, Alcan’s vice-president corporate and external affairs. “It instills in tomorrow’s leaders an understanding and appreciation of the link between successful business practices and sustainability.”
Alcan launched IMBN 12 years ago in the Saguenay region of Quebec. Today, the program also has offices in the U.S., Brazil, Thailand and Malaysia, involving more than 32,000 young people each year.
The IMBN helps schools raise revenue through recycling projects; students then use the money to start up “micro-businesses.”
Alcan, which generated US$12.6 billion in revenue last year, employs 48,000 people and has operating facilities in 38 countries.
