About 4,000 miners have burned buildings and marched on government offices in northern Zambia to protest lost wages.
Some of the miners have not been paid in six months, and others, who had been laid off, are seeking compensation packages.
Also, some of the miners in Luanshya, in the Copperbelt province, beat a local politician during the rioting. The unrest was eventually quelled by police using tear gas.
Zambia’s already-fragile economy has been hurt by recent mine closures, including the the Roan Antelope mine in Luanshya.
