Vaughn addresses CIM

Globalization and its effects on Canadian mining will be the topic of a talk delivered by Steve Vaughan, a partner with Toronto law firm McMillan Binch, at the next luncheon of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. The event is slated for noon on Feb. 20 at the Ontario Club in downtown Toronto.

Vaughn has a master’s degree in geology, as well as a law degree, and has been in the mineral industry since 1955. He has served as a director of Atomic Energy of Canada and is currently a director of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada. In 2002, he received the PDAC’s distinguished service award, as well as the CIM’s distinguished lecturer award.

CAMESE heads to Moscow

MineWorld Russia 2003 (formerly Mintek), slated for March 25-28 in Moscow, will give mining suppliers a chance to show off their wares in that country.

The Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export (CAMESE) has participated in four previous versions of the Russian exhibition. The 2002 show attracted 54 mining exhibitors, including CAMESE and four member firms, as well as more than 5,000 visitors.

This year a seminar will provide delegates with information on trends and market developments in Russian mining.

Timmins conference

Field trips to mining camps in Sudbury and Timmins, Ont., as well as one to Val d’Or, Que., will be featured at a conference on deep ore deposits, scheduled for Sept. 23-26 in Timmins.

Jointly sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, and the Porcupine Prospectors & Developers Association, the field trips will examine deep mining operations and related surface geology at the Kidd Creek mine, in Timmins, the Creighton mine, in Sudbury, and the LaRonde mine, near Val d’Or.

Participation is limited to 15 persons per trip.

Also, talks and poster presentations will focus on geotechnical methods used in the exploration and mining of deep ore deposits.
