Letters to the Editor Opposed amalgamations

Re: your article on Kiena, Sigma and Placer (N.M., June 20/88):

After the Ontario Securities Commission denied our request for a hearing in the matter of the amalgamations of Placer Dome with Kiena and Sigma we felt that, in view of the parent company’s intention to vote its controlling interests in favor of the proposals, the result would be a foregone conclusion and I cancelled my plans to attend the meetings in Quebec City. Nevertheless, just for the record, I sent proxies (naming the undersigned) to the transfer agent, Canada Trust, to be voted against the resolutions. These proxies totalled 1,457,475 shares of Sigma and 2,161,725 shares of Kiena.

But unfortunately, since I did not attend these meetings, these shares were not voted at all.

I cannot comment on any legal (or ethical) aspects regarding this, but I would be very grateful if you would set the record straight and note that the majority of the minority, indeed, the vast majority of the minority, were opposed to these amalgamations.
