Four additional properties have been picked up by All- North Resources and Chevron Minerals in the Kluane district of the Yukon. Known as the Kluane joint venture, the two companies say the 99 claims contain nickel-copper showings associated with peridotite dikes or sills similar to those hosting significant platinum group mineralization at the former Wellgreen mine. The first property, the Canalask, is located 50 miles northwest of Wellgreen. It contains indicated reserves of 550,000 tons grading 1.68% nickel and 0.04% copper, all of which was delineated by drilling and underground development from 1952-73. Very few samples were assayed for platinum but one 10-ft sample returned 0.94% nickel per ton, 0.33% copper, 0.013 oz platinum and 0.04 oz palladium. A 2-stage exploration program has been recommended for this group at a cost of $400,000.
The Onion property five miles to the northwest covers a showing that was discovered about 1953 and explored intermittently until 1970. Pentlandite is reported to occur with pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in a peridotite dike. Assays up to 20% nickel have been reported but no platinum group values are available, says the Kluane joint venture.
The third property lies 12 miles southeast of Canalask and covers a narrow peridotite dike and two widely separated nickel float occurrences. The last property is situated at Telluride Creek 60 miles southeast of Wellgreen. Mineralized float from poorly exposed ultramafic bodies was noted during previous exploration of a base metal showing. One specimen graded 0.86% nickel, 1.15% copper, 0.036 oz platinum and 0.15 oz palladium per ton.
