The consolidation of three milling and concentrating operations in the Sudbury, Ont., area will be carried out by giant nickel producer Inco Ltd. (TSE) at a capital cost of $69 million.
Affected by the consolidation will be the Frood-Stobie, Clarabelle and Copper Cliff mills. The program also provides for the separation and rejection of additional quantities of high sulphur-bearing pyrrhotite mineral to tailings, a part of Inco’s plans to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions.
The company also plans to spend an additional $19.6 million to expand the mills tailings impoundment area.
As a result of the mill rationalization program, the Frood-Stobie mill will be shut down and retired, all milling and concentrating facilities will be carried out at the Clarabelle mill, and only the dewatering of concentrates for smelting will be carried out at the Copper Cliff mill.
Expansion of the impoundment area is the second phase of a 3-phase program to provide for the disposal of tailings well into the next century, Inco says.
Both capital programs will take about 2 1/2 years to complete.
