Women’s association fund raising auction

A picnic and cruise for six down the Humber River on mining executive Leon LaPrairie’s boat sold for $1,000, Franc Joubin’s portable typewriter went for $700 and a bottle of French red wine autographed by Canada’s premier mining stock promoter Murray Pezim fetched $80 during an auction at the Women’s Association of the Mining Industry of Canada’s annual fund- raising dinner.

About 350 people turned out for the event held recently at Toronto’s Granite Club. The auction, raffle draw, bazaar and dinner raised proceeds to support bursaries, scholarships and charitable donations of the association.

Patrick Sheridan was the auctioneer for the auction where some of the other notable items sold included: $1,200 for the C-I-L suite at Maple Leaf Gardens for 10 people for one game against the Philadelphia Flyers; $800 for a gold nugget weighing about one ounce; $1,500 for an evening for eight at the home of Jeannie and Howard Stockford on Robbie Burns’ night including a pheasant dinner, piping of the haggis and reading of “The Ode;” and an award-winning crib quilt which sold for $500.

In the raffle, Marilyn Levand of West Hill, Ont., won $100 in Loony coins, Bryan Campbell of Willowdale, Ont., won a dinner for two at the Imperial Room at Toronto’s Royal York Hotel, Margaret Guest of Willowdale, Ont., won a duvet set, Eileen Williamson of Toronto won a diamond tennis bracelet and Ashley Balchin of Oakville, Ont., won a Wardair London show tour for two.
