One deposit contained less than 15% lump, with the other two indicating a lump ore content ranging from 41% to more than 90%. Hollinger reports lump ore, becoming more in demand by steel and direct reduced iron ore producers, commands a 25% premium over finer materials.
In addition to iron properties, Hollinger was also searching for manganese deposits. The company reports locating more than 15 open cast deposits which indicate potential for upgrading to commercial standards.
Metallurgical tests, the company reports, indicate commercial grades (45% plus) from one deposit by screening and sink-float separation.
Hollinger has acquired a 1,300- ton-per-day sink-float plant for erection on company property near Schefferville, Que. The plant will be used for full-scale metallurgical tests of screened manganese- bearing raw material.
The intent, says President Fenton Scott, is to produce upgraded ores to commercial standards of 45% manganese content. The concentrated ores will be transported by rail to Sept-Iles, Que., and forwarded to potential customers for testing. Fine material is being stockpiled.
The sink-float plant will also be used for tests on specific ores from the company’s iron mines, Scott reports.
