Pressure filter manufacturers say their product beats vacuum filters because filtration takes place under as much as 16 atmospheres (235 pounds per sq inch, or p.s.i.), producing a drier cake. A tighter weave in the filter cloth and less cracking of the filter cake are also advantages to pressure filters.

The frontrunners in terms of equipment in use in mineral processing plants worldwide are the Lasta Press, manufactured by Ingersoll-Rand Industrial Process Machinery, and the Larox pressure filter. Eimco Process Equipment Company makes another popular filter, known as the the Shriver filter press. The new kid on the block is Dagex Process Separation Equipment, which markets the Verti-Press. Lasta The Lasta pressure filters manufactured by Ingersoll-Rand’s Impco Division, have a reputation for reliability, high energy savings, low maintenance costs and dewatering capabilities that eliminate thermal dryers, says the company. The Model ISF Lasta G automatic filter press is a programmable horizontal recessed plate filter press. It offers two-sided filtration, uniform washing, unique cloth sealing to prevent peripheral air losses, independent adjustment of cloth travel in each chamber and washing on both sides of the cloth.

The Lasta operation is a 4-step cycle: feeding/filtering, back air blowing cycle, cake discharge and cloth wash. Cake moisture content can be as low as 6%. Larox

Larox Inc. has 10 different Larox PF-type models, ranging from the Larox PF 2.5 (a filter area of 2.55 sq m) to the PF 32 (31.5 sq m). The Larox presses can have anywhere from six to 20 filter plates stacked one over the other in a vertical configuration. According to the company, the advantages of Larox PF models include fully automatic operation, positive cake discharge, no continuously moving parts, automatic backwashing of cloth during each cycle, and as much as 95% filter availability.

The PF also is self-cleaning because the filter cloth turns when it moves from the upper plate to a lower plate. The Larox consists of filter plates, frame, closing device, cloth drive roller, cloth tensioning device, cloth centring roller, cloth and vat washing system and valves for slurry, wash liquid, pressure air, filtrate and cloth wash liquid.

The unit also incorporates a control panel and a pressure water station equipped with a high pressure pump. The filter is either a stainless steel or an acid-proof structure. Shriver

Eimco’s Shriver overhead press features what Eimco considers state-of-the-a rt pneumatic rodless cyclinder technology (the Shrivermatic cents shifter, as it’s known); an automatic high- pressure (500-1,500 p.s.i.) cloth washing apparatus; and something called FRED, an acronym for Flexi-Fabric Recess Evacuation Discharge, which automatically releases the cake.

The Shriver design itself, with widespread beams, allows easy plate stack access. Other features include automatic drip trays, double end feed (where required) and automatic controls. Filtering pressures of 600 p.s.i. and more are obtainable. Shriver offers either a sidebar or overhead plate support. Shriver also manufactures four other plate shifter designs beyond the Shrivermatic. Verti-Press

The latest entry into the field is Verti-Press, manufactured by Dagex Process Separation Equipment. Only five units were sold in the first 3 1/2 years of manufacture but, during the past 18 months, the company reports that 11 were sold.

The Verti-Press features include a rigid frame with no movement of the chambers; a rubberized edge of the filter cloth as a side seal; individual conveyor belt drives, which result in faster cycle times; an ability to split the feed so that the press can discharge at half capacity; and minimal field erection.

The Verti-Press also has individual chamber isolation capability so that if one chamber malfunctions the remaining chambers can operate without shutdown.
