`Rousseau Wrench’ helps during breakout VANCOUVER — An innovative

An innovative tool for use during “break-out” has been developed by Longyear Canada. The idea for the tool came from a driller at Longyear, and the tool was subsequently named after him.

Dubbed the “Rousseau Wrench”, it takes the place of the pipe wrench and in fact could be described as a hydraulically activated pipe wrench attached to the mast of the drilling rig. The wrench grips the rod above the joint, allowing the rotation of the head to unscrew the pipe.

Its main advantage is that the chance of an accident caused by a flying pipe wrench disappears.

Activated hydraulically from the operator’s normal operating position, the tool is designed to increase productivity and lessen operator fatigue.
