Some 700 geologists recently attended the Geological Survey of Canada’s first Minerals Colloquium in Ottawa. Explorationists presented case histories of borehole geophysical studies on Canadian precious and base metal deposits that were jointly sponsored by the exploration industry and the GSC. The speakers addressed a variety of subjects, from GSC’s seafloor minerals program to modern and ancient massive sulphide deposits. Among them were the Jason deposit in the Yukon Territory, the massive sulphide deposits of the Bathurst camp in New Brunswick and the Buchans mine in Newfoundland.
The session of precious metals dealt with Canadian gold deposit models, gold deposits in north China platform and GSC’s work on the deformed porphyry copper, molybdenum and precious metal system of the Sulphurets area in British Columbia.
The first Lang lecture was given by David Watkins of Minnova Inc. and Harold Gibson of Falconbridge Ltd. It focused on Noranda’s massive sulphide deposits and illustrated the usefulness of modern seafloor sulphide research in traditional mineral exploration strategies.
