Reynolds opens mine in Guyana

Reynolds International, a unit of Reynolds Metals (NYSE), and the government of Guyana recently celebrated the startup of their joint enterprise, Aroaima Bauxite.

Aroaima hosts more than 25 million tonnes of known bauxite reserves at two mining sites on the Berbice River, about 112 km southwest of Georgetown, the capital. The operation reached its annualized production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes in less than one year.

The ceremonies were attended by more than 200 people including Guyana President Hugh Desmond Hoyte and Randolph Reynolds, president of Reynolds International.

Reynolds is the first international company to invest in Guyana in more than a decade. The joint venture, which employs 250 at its mining, port and office facilities, has injected $60 million into the Guyana economy.
