Surface drilling along a gold zone discovered 300 ft. north of the main horizon at Agnico-Eagle Mines’ (TSE) LaRonde mine near Rouyn-Noranda, Que., (T.N.M., Nov. 25/91) is producing encouraging results.
The 10-hole program, completed in January, encountered several gold-bearing sulphide lenses. Intercepts include true thicknesses of 9.5 ft. grading 0.25 oz. gold per ton, 6.45% zinc, 0.13% copper and 2.19 oz. silver in hole 91-63 and 4.6 ft. grading 0.13 oz. gold, 6.15% zinc, 0.28% copper and 0.18 oz. silver in hole 91-65.
Located 1,700 ft. east of the LaRonde shaft, the new horizon has been the focus of Agnico’s underground exploration drive on the 20th level (2,800 ft. below surface). It has been traced along a strike length of 1.5 miles. About 800 ft. further east, Agnico hit one massive sulphide lens with high-grade gold and base metal values at depths ranging from 200 ft. to 700 ft. below surface. Results include 25.6 ft. grading 0.85 oz. gold, 6.15% zinc, 1.62% copper and 1.80 oz. silver.
Geologically, the intersections from this massive sulphide lens lie in the same horizon as those encountered below the 20th level. Current work is aimed at determining the strike extent of the shallow zone and continuing development on the 20th level. Drilling on the 20th level is expected to resume by the end of February.
