Porgera installs vertical conveyor

Placer Dome’s (TSE) Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea chalked up another first with the recent successful commissioning of a 670-ft. underground vertical ore conveyor.

The conveyor, the first of its kind in an underground mine, can carry 350 tons per hour up the equivalent height of a 67-storey office tower. The conveyor replaces a more costly and less efficient hoisting and skipping system.

The 50-ton, German-made conveyor was shipped by boat, and then transported to Porgera by truck. It was the heaviest single load transported by road in all of Porgera’s construction.
