ASBESTOS WAR

With the government of Quebec backing it, the Asbestos Institute is appealing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (epa) ban on the use of asbestos. The full effect of the U.S. ban on importing, making and using the fibrous mineral probably won’t be felt until 1996.

Asbestos Institute President Michel Gratton told the Canadian Occupational Health and Safety News that the epa’s actions were predominantly the result of politics rather than scientific evidence. He also questions the safety of some asbestos substitutes, because, he says, the substitutes themselves have not been studied adequately.

The institute has submitted its case to the U.S. Court of Appeal, which should issue a ruling before the end of 1991.
