In the article “Fire Down Below” (NMM, Feb/90), one case history mentioned was that of a haulage truck which “caught fire because a worn transmission hose leaked and sprayed transmission oil on to the hot turbo-charger.” It was stated that, in order to prevent such calamities, a daily inspection procedure had been implemented.
It could also be mentioned that fire-resistant hydraulic fluids are available through a number of Canadian manufacturers and distributors. These fluids are tested and certified by the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (canmet) as complying with the requirements of csa Standard M423 Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids.
Through the Canadian Explosive Atmospheres Laboratory of the Mining Research Laboratories Division, canmet tests and certifies a number of products for underground mine use. Hydraulic fluids, mine ducting and conveyor belting are but three examples of products that can be certified as fire-resistant or self-extinguishing.
