LONG LIFE FOR LONGYEAR

Longyear Canada of North Bay, Ont. has entered its second century of existence. Last year, it celebrated its centenary with the introduction of several new products. For example, “Thin Kerf” wireline products have resulted in increased production rates and larger cores from standard hole sizes. The first such product was the aqtk, which proved the theory. Now, the bqtk has been released and the company says field performance continues to exceed expectations.

Its standard wireline products are also being improved. A “positive landing indicator” was released earlier this year. This will be incorporated into the standard core barrel configuration.

Longyear’s drill line has been undergoing considerable development, as well. The workhorse “44” and “38” drills have been augmented by the LM 37 underground version. And, only recently, a new version of this was released. This second-generation product has been dubbed the LM45.

For surface versions, the LM85 prototype has been completed. This all-hydraulic, long-feed drill with a 2,500-ft. bq capacity boasts advanced head design and a new, simplified chuck.

In deep-hole drilling equipment, Longyear is refining its Hydro 55 model. Combining hydraulic input and controls with conventional right angle mechanical drives, this new model, called the Hydro 185, is smooth and easy to control, and it has the depth capacity of conventional drills.

Finally, Longyear’s diamond products have been advanced with the new Series 9 bit, which excels in medium-hard to hard broken ground.
