LAST BUT NOT LEAST — Sonora closes Jamestown mine

Mining has ceased at the Jamestown open-pit gold mine in California.

The mine, wholly owned by Sonora Gold (TSE), produced 92,000 oz. in 1993, 129,200 oz. in 1992 and 132,400 oz. in 1991.

Sonora originally held a 70% interest and, last year, bought the remaining 30% from a subsidiary of French conglomerate Cogema. As part of the deal, the subsidiary repaid a $US4.4-million bank loan held by Sonora and contributed US$2 million toward reclamation costs and working capital.

Sonora is 42%-owned by a subsidiary of Northgate Exploration (TSE).
