Phelps, Sumitomo plan expansion

Japan-based Sumitomo Metal Mining and Phelps Dodge (NYSE) will jointly enlarge, by 40%, a copper mining venture in Arizona.

The total investment will be US$200 million, with Sumitomo holding 15% and Phelps Dodge, 85%.

Sumitomo officials said they expect to increase annual production of copper to 227,000 from 158,000, tonnes beginning in 1996.
