Inco assesses shaft damage

The main T-1 mine shaft at the Manitoba division facilities of Inco (TSE) in Thompson, Man., will not return to normal operation until the second-half of September, the company says.

Inco recently completed a preliminary assessment of the extent of the damage caused by the July 12 accident involving an ore-hoisting device which dropped to the bottom of the shaft.

The accident occurred on the second day of the division’s scheduled 4-week vacation shutdown, which ended Aug. 8. No injuries were involved in this accident.

Inco says a modified startup will be implemented.

It is expected that, as a result of this change in startup of operations, the division’s total nickel production for the months of August and September will be about 8 million lb. below planned levels for the period. The company, however, expects it will be able to continue to meet customer requirements for all of its products from scheduled production and inventory. Inco’s Thompson operations employ 1,700 persons and produce about 100 million lb. of finished nickel annually.
