Ontario’s acting minister of northern development and mines has been appointed to the portfolio on a full-time basis.
Gilles Pouliot assumed his new job in a cabinet shuffle by Premier Bob Rae. Pouliot previously served as minister of transportation.
The former mines minister, Shelley Martel, recently resigned after being accused of violating the province’s Freedom of Information and Privacy Act. Pouliot was first elected to the provincial legislature in 1985. Following the New Democratic Party victory in 1990, he was appointed minister of mines and served for about a year before assuming the transportation portfolio. Speculation is growing that Rae will call an election next spring.
