Diamond drilling has encountered high-grade, parallel mineralized zones at the Florencia Sector gold deposit near Camaguey, Cuba, reports project operator MacDonald Mines Exploration (CDN).
Last fall, 15 holes totalling 8,200 ft., were drilled to test mineralized zones previously identified from surface work and Cuban drilling. Some of the better surface sampling results include 0.17 oz. gold over 17.1 ft., and 0.42 oz. over 8.5 ft.
The new holes yielded intersections at vertical depths ranging from 200 to 600 ft. Some of the high-grade intersections include 0.98 oz. gold per ton over 6.9 ft., 1.21 oz. over 3.6 ft., 1.62 oz. over 4.1 ft. and 0.47 oz. over 10.7 ft. Eleven other intercepts encountered mineralized structures, with results varying from 0.1 to 0.32 oz. over widths of 3 to 8 ft. The gold mineralization at Florencia occurs in a regionally extensive fault zone which cuts chloritized mafic volcanic rocks.
MacDonald is compiling the results from the current program and integrating them with previous results to decide on further drill targets. An induced-polarization survey is under way to help determine the strike length of the mineralized zones beyond the Florencia Sector, in the surrounding Florencia-Jobabo region.
The Florencia Sector is a 50-50 joint venture between MacDonald and Geominera S.A., the Cuban state-owned mining company.
In the Florencia-Jobabo region, in which MacDonald and Mill City Gold Mining (VSE)can each earn a 25% interest, Geoterrex has been retained to complete an airborne geophysical survey. Geominera holds the remaining half interest in the region.
