Workers at the Dome gold mine of Placer Dome (TSE) voted 75% in favor of accepting a new contract. The agreement, approved Oct. 31 by the workers, ended a 6-month strike by the 575 members of Local 7580 of the United Steelworkers of America.
It was a bittersweet agreement for the union. Earlier in October, Placer announced the layoff of 354 mine employees, including 309 union members. Ten of those job eliminations were firings that included the entire union local executive.
Placer threatened to close the 80-year-old mine on Nov. 16 if the union did not accept the deal.
