Twenty-one charges have been laid against Eldorado Mines by the Quebec government relating to arsenic-contaminated soil at an abandoned mine near the small community of Duparquet, Que. Ten of the 21 charges are for first-time offences, 10 for second- time offences and one for a third- time offence. The privately owned company is the first to be charged by the government under a provincial law which forces a company to clean up pollution caused by it. A court date has been set for Sept. 19 at La Sarre, Que.
Two years ago, a $105,000 fine was levied on the company by the Quebec Superior Court relating to charges arising from emissions of arsenic trioxide. Eldorado is appealing that ruling.
