George Webber, longtime employee of the Hollinger gold mine in Timmins, Ont., died recently in Georgetown, Ont. He was 89. Born in London, England, he came to Canada in the early 1920s. Webber initially hired by Hollinger as a miner, rose through the ranks to shift boss, mine foreman, mine captain and finally mine superintendent.
After retirement in 1968, Webber was invited back to Timmins on various occasions to give talks on supervision and accident prevention at the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and other meetings.
