LETTER TO THE EDITOR — Tory education cuts undermine industry’s future

The so-called “attack” on the deficit by the Progressive Conservative government of Ontario is really an attack on the Ontario education system.

The $800 million that has been extracted from public education is already affecting the system’s ability to provide specialized programs such as geology. The geology program offered by the Scarborough Board of Education was cut last year even though the last class was packed with 36 students.

Geology programs have also been the victim of cuts in other jurisdictions such as Nova Scotia. Unless something is done soon, Canada will lose its standing as a leader in mining and mining technology.
