Peter Barnett, a geologist with the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS), has received the 2003 provincial geologist’s medal. The presentation was made during a conference of Canada’s energy and mines ministers.
The award recognizes contributions to geoscientific research, including provincial and territorial geological surveys.
For nearly three decades, Barnett has undertaken geologic mapping in all areas of Ontario — from groundwater-related mapping in the Oak Ridges Moraine to terrain evaluations of the northern wilderness. He has developed remote-sensing applications, performed archeological studies, and taught geology at Laurentian University.
A committee of geologists from several provinces awards the medal to an individual who has produced outstanding work at either a provincial or territorial geological survey.
“Peter’s achievements contribute significantly to the work of the Ontario Geological Survey and to the high level of client service for which the OGS is well-known,” said John Gammon, assistant deputy minister, mines and minerals division.
The OGS supports Ontario’s mineral sector by providing valuable services and information to companies, educators, researchers and government.
