NEWS ROUNDUP — Aussie firm to close Beenup mine

Ongoing technical problems and production shortfalls have prompted Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP-N) to close its Beenup titanium mine in Western Australia.

The company tried, unsuccessfully, to solve the technical problems caused by the deposit’s high clay content. It also tried to sell the mine to major titanium mineral producers and processors around the world, but to no avail.

BHP will take a US$150-million writedown on the project, and a decommissioning and mine site rehabilitation plan is being prepared for consideration by the Australian government.
