Highwood plans Thor Lake program

The Thor Lake beryllium deposit, east of Yellowknife, N.W.T., may at last be on its way to development.

Highwood Resources (hwd-T) has applied for permits from the territorial government and the Water Board for bulk sampling. The company plans to build a demonstration-scale processing plant at Hay River (a short truck haul from the Great Slave Lake railway) and ship concentrates from the plant to southern Alberta.

An updated feasibility study recommended bulk sampling of the Thor Lake pegmatite body, whose two mineralized zones sport a total resource of 1.5 million tonnes grading about 0.75% beryllium.

The only other operating beryllium mine in North America is in Juab, Utah.

Operated by Brush Wellman (BW-N), the mine was last estimated to host 14.3 million tonnes grading 0.26% beryllium.
