Stepping out from known mineralization at the Bongara zinc property in northern Peru, partners Cominco (CLT-T) and Solitario Resources (SLR-T) have encountered more high-grade zinc.
Some 500 metres northeast of known mineralization at the Florida Canyon prospect, drill crews intersected 5.1 metres grading 27% zinc, 3.2% lead and 25 grams silver per tonne.
The hole, No. 36, was part of a 2,700-metre program. Six of the eight stepout holes hit strong alteration, four of which returned significant values.
Hole 37, drilled 300 metres north of known mineralization, encountered more than 300 metres of dolomitic alteration associated with karst features and low-grade zinc mineralization. The hole also hit shorter intervals of higher grade, including 1.8 metres of 12% zinc at a depth of 271 metres, and 1 metre of 5.9% zinc and 1.2% lead at a depth of 314 metres.
Closer to the known deposit, hole 33 cut 1.7 metres of 24.9% zinc and 3.6% lead, whereas hole 35 hit 2.3 metres of 20.5% zinc and 1.3 metres of 15.8% zinc.
Cominco also completed surface reconnaissance on the 81,000-ha Bongara property, where 18 additional anomalies were found. The company plans to compile the surface and drillhole data before planning exploration for 1999.
Cominco is earning a 60% interest in the property from Solitario by spending US$27.5 million over four years.
