Micon finds alliances expand reach

Mineral industry consulting firm Micon International has found that non-exclusive alliances, such as the one it announced in late May with poject-management and technology firm Wardrop Engineering (T.N.M., June 3/02), expand the company’s geographical reach and allow it to offer more services to clients.

Alliance agreements, which are broader than the more familiar joint-venture and sub-consultant arrangements which firms frequently make on individual projects and bid submissions, allow consultants to collaborate in markets where two firms can do more than either could alone.

Micon, for example, has worked with SNC Lavalin, Acres International and Hatch Associates on projects in Africa, Canada and South America. Under the teaming arrangement between Micon and Wardrop, the two firms have submitted joint statements of qualifications, and a Wardrop specialist has joined the Micon team assessing the potential for productivity increases at Jiangxi Copper’s Wushan underground mine in China.
