Editorial Who says engineers are illiterate?

Readers will have noticed by now that our popular “Odds ‘n’ Sods” column has moved — we expect more or less permanently — to the editorial page, where it enjoys a prominence we hope it deserves. We do in fact regularly get the kind of favorable comments on the column that seem to justify the repositioning.

We continue to be amazed as well as gratified by the number and va riety of people who provide the stories for the “Odds” column. Not too long ago, for instance, it was pretty much a male authorship preserve, but we’ve now had a number of columns from women and we’re looking for the trend to continue.

Almost none of our contributors are professional writers in any sens e, but again we’ve been surprised to find how frequently their yarns come across our desk so well written and full of flavor that they need very little editorial ministration from us. Who said that prospectors, engineers, geologists, etc., can’t write? If we ever did, we don’t now.

To all present and prospective “Odds” authors, we offer a ready eye, and the assurance of an appreciative audience.
