A subsidiary has been formed by Robex Resources of Quebec City for the purpose of bringing into production a barite deposit located in Upton Twp. in Quebec’s Eastern twps.
The company hopes to have the property in production by the end of 1988; estimated cost of the project is $15.5 million.
Robex notes that the annual Canadian consumption of barite is 80,000 tons, with close to 75% (58,000 tons) of that total imported. Robex projects an annual production of 25,700 tons from the property, which is located near a highway. An open-pit operation is planned.
In Canada, drilling muds represent 90% of the annual barite demand, with industrial products such as rubber, glass, paint, explosives and inks consuming the balance, the company says.
