WHAT’S NEW The Tools of Automation Beefed Up Excavator

Caterpillar has beefed up its Cat 225 hydraulic excavator. Using a direct- injection Cat 3208 diesel engine rated at 108 kW, engine power has been increased 7%.

The additions of a 3.9-tonne counterweight, 6-in-diameter boom cylinders and a 31,028 kPa relief pressure in the heavy lift circuit have increased by 25% the lift capacity of the new 225B. Bucket sizes range from 0.75 cu yd to 1.75 cu yd and maximum digging depth is seven m. Swing rotation speed is 8.3 rpm.

Larger pins have been used at the cylinder-to-boom and boom-to-stick junctions to accommodate the higher work demands.
